WINGATE, NC - Mars Hill College freshman midfielder Tyler Farmer (Calgary, Alberta) has been named the 2008 Deep South Conference Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, league officials announced this week. Farmer racked up six goals and three assists in the two games, leading Mars Hill to its first DSC tournament title.
The MHC Lions defeated Catawba College 11-10 in the semifinals Friday night. Farmer registered three goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal with 1:58 remaining in the contest. He scored three more goals in the 9-7 win over Saint Leo University Sunday in the championship game.
Farmer was joined on the all-tournament team by four additional members of the victorious Lions. Junior attack David Hodgins (Windor, Ontario) had five goals and an assist, including a three goal, one assist game against Catawba in the semifinals.
Mars Hill sophomore midfielder Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta) racked up three goals in the two games. Junior midfielder Kris Frier (Tully, N.Y.) helped anchor the Mars Hill defense in the two victories, while junior goalie Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) collecting 18 saves in the tournament.
Saint Leo was the runner-up in the 2008 tournament, losing to Mars Hill 9-7 in the title game after a thrilling 8-7 double overtime victory over number nine Wingate in the semifinals. Junior midfielder Mark Dargon (Newton, Mass.) had three goals and three assists in the two games for the SLU Lions.
SLU Lions junior attack Ryan Pomponio (Garden City, N.Y.) had four goals and one assist in the tournament, with three goals and an assist in the Friday semifinal victory. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) had three goals in the two games. Marceau scored the game-winner in the second overtime against Wingate.
Wingate University had two players named to the all-tournament team. Senior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) had four goals and an assist in Wingate’s 8-7 double overtime loss to Saint Leo in the semifinals Friday night while junior defender Evan Schaller (Kirkville, N.Y.) helped anchor the Bulldog defense.
Catawba College also placed two players on the all-tournament team. Senior attack Kurt Green (San Diego, Calif.) racked up five goals and an assist in Catawba’s 11-10 loss to Mars Hill in the semifinals. Sophomore midfielder Sean Duggan (Wantagh, N.Y.) added a pair of goals for the Catawba Indians.
