March 8, 2008

BLACKSBURG, VA. –  Saturday’s meet featured several Olympians and some of the top Collegiate athletes in the nation as they tried for a last opportunity to qualify for Indoor Nationals.  A total of 15 Mars Hill men and women competed on the 200 meter banked track recognized as one of the fastest surfaces in the nation.  It was bitter cold and flurrying outside.

Nadine Hayes (Winston-Salem, NC) and Maloree Wallace (Yonkers, NY) opened the day for the Mars Hill ladies.  They competed in the 60 meter High Hurdles and both turned in their best performances of the season.  Next up for the ladies was the 60 meter dash and all three Mars Hill runners ran strong.  Gabby Walker (Chattanooga, TN) turned in another school record performance with at time of 7.92 seconds.  She was closely followed by Tandra Landers (Monroe, GA) whose time narrowly missed also surpassing the previous record and Sharisse Sutherland (Marietta, GA).  In the mile run Hannah Moore (Franklin, NC) and Hannah Washburn (Clemson, SC) both ran their fastest times of the season.

For the Mars Hill men Will Barber (Rock Hill, SC) competed in the 60 meter High Hurdles and had his best time of the season.  And the men’s Distance Medley Relay team set a new Mars Hill record with a time of 10:30.40.  The team consisted of Aaron Thomas (Seminole, FL), Will Mikolajczak (Triangle, VA), Tom Carpenter (Medina, OH) and Dustin Whitlow (Ashburn, VA).

For seniors Keely Hollahan and Dustin Whitlow it was a bittersweet day as the completed their last Indoor Season.  Next up for them and the rest of the teams is a week of practice and then Spring Break.  The multi-event athletes return to action on March 26th and 27th at the Winthrop Multi-Event Invitational in Rock Hill, SC.  The rest of the teams will compete on Saturday, March 29th at the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, NC.
