CULLOWHEE, NC. –  Thunderstorms greeted the teams when they arrived in Cullowhee for the Western Carolina Invitational Saturday morning.  After an hour delay the meet got underway in spite of the soggy conditions for some of the field events.  The meet featured ten teams with a mixture of D-I, D-II and NAIA schools.

For the ladies it was an overall solid performance in their first Outdoor Meet of the season.  Highlighting the day were a strong 4 X 100 meter relay race earning the Mars Hill ladies a new school record of 50.27.  Running for the team were Gabby Walker (Chattanooga, TN), Sharisse Sutherland (Marietta, GA), Malaree Wallace (Yonkers, NY) and Tandra Landers (Monroe, GA).  In the throws Erin Stowe (Cincinnati OH) earned a 6th place overall in the shot put and 5th place in the discus against some tough competition.

Frankie Walters (Brevard, NC) got off to a great start in his first college meet.  Frankie won the 110 High Hurdles with a time of 15.37.  He followed that up with a 5th place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 11.17.  In the 1500 meters Aaron Thomas (Seminole, FL) and Dustin Whitlow (Ashburn, VA) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.  In the men’s javelin Dick Clarke (Lookout Mountain, GA), Alan Broadnax (Travelers Rest, SC) and Brandon Anthony (Kings Mountain, NC) all had big personal best throws.

Next up for the teams is a trip to Williamsburg, KY for the University of the Cumberlands Invitational.  The meet features some of the best D-II programs in the Southeast.  The meet will be on Saturday, April 12th.
