MARS HILL, NC - In the first day of competition at the Mars Hill Women's Soccer Invitational Carson-Newman College came from behind to defeat Queens University of Charlotte 4-2 and then MHC fell 1-0 to Pfeiffer University. Competition will resume on Sunday, September 2 when C-N hosts Pfeiffer at 1 p.m. and then the Lions will take on Queens immediately following that contest.

In the first contest of the day, the Eagles, ranked seventh in the NSCAA D-II National poll, trailed Queens late into the contest but scored three unanswered goal in the final 19 minutes of play to remain undefeated at 3-0. Queens fell to 1-1 on the season.

Kari Byzewski gave the Falcons a 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 29th minute. C-N tied the contest four minutes later when Julie Nelson scored off a corner kick sent in by Megan Julian. Jackie Groff scored at the 36:57 mark to give Queens a 2-1 advantage they would take into the locker room at the intermission.

Claire Ramsdale tied the match at 2-all at 72:54 before Julian notched what would prove to be the match winner with seven minutes left in regulation. Julian added an insurance goal at he 88:17 mark to make the final tally 4-2 in favor of the Eagles.

C-N out shot Queens 30-to-4. Nyssa Griffin made two saves for C-N while Kristen Kornacki made 10 saves for Queens. Both keepers played all 90 minutes.

Pfeiffer 1, MHC 0
After 70 scoreless minutes of play, Kristen Bartsch scored on a breakaway to lift the Falcons past MHC 1-0. The game winning score was assisted by Angela Reale.

MHC out shot Pfeiffer 18-to-13. Claudia Cala (Hamilton, NJ) made seven saves for MHC while Suzie Hinman had eight saves for the Falcons. Both keepers played the entire contest in the net.
