Alicia BlahaMARS HILL, NC - In the second day of competition at the Mars Hill Women's Soccer Invitational Carson-Newman College defeated Pfeiffer University 4-0 and then MHC defeated Queens University of Charlotte, 2-1 in overtime.

In the first contest of the day, the Eagles, ranked seventh in the NSCAA D-II National poll, scored three goals in the first frame to pull off an easy 4-0 victory over Queens. Morgan Gruenenfielde scored twice in the win and assisted on another goal. C-N is 4-0 on the season while Pfeiffer dropped to 1-3.

Zarmena Kasparites scored the Eagles first goal on a cross from Gruenenfielde at the 7:27 mark. Just under seven minutes later Gruenenfielde scored her first goal off a deflection. With three minutes left in the first half Jessie Stephens scored on a breakaway to give C-N a 3-0 advantage at the intermission.

Gruenenfielde added the final goal at the 59:32 mark. The goal was assisted by Lydia Wright.

C-N out shot Pfeiffer 35-to-4. Melissa Terrell made three saves for C-N while Suzie Hinman made 11 saves for Pfeiffer. Both keepers played all 90 minutes.

MHC 2, Pfeiffer 1 - Overtime
Eight seconds into the first overtime period Alicia Blaha (Rapid City, SD) hit Riley Dorsey (Gaithersburg, MD) on a breakaway pass and she found the back of the net to lift the Lions over Queens 2-1 in Meares Stadium. The Lions improved to 2-3 while Queens fell to 1-2 on the year.

Abby Martin (Greer, SC) gave MHC a 1-0 lead at the 5:33 mark off a cross from Blaha. The teams carried that score into the locker room at halftime. Sami Striano tied the contest at 1-all at the 61:33 mark off a deflection.

Claudia Cala (Hamilton, NJ) made nine saves for MHC while Kristen Kornacki made four stops for Pfeiffer. Both goalies played the entire 90:52. Queens out shot MHC, 23-to-12.

Mars Hill will host King College on September 5. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. start.
