SPARTANBURG, S.C. – This year’s Eye Opener Invitational featured 150 College and High School teams and over 2,400 total runners. First up were the Lady Lions who turned in a solid performance. The team was led by freshman Angela Woodward (Gahanna, OH) who ran a personal best time of 20:46. Close behind Angela were Anita Casey (Greer, SC) in 21:29 and Laurel Sitze (Raleigh, NC) in 21.46. Overall the ladies show strong improvement from their last race. Also finishing in the top five for the team were Hannah Washburn (Clemson, SC) and Hannah Moore (Franklin, NC).
The men’s team once again captured the non-Division I title finishing 1st out of 22 teams. They were also led by a freshman, Joel Barnett (Greenville, SC). Joel’s time of 27:12 earned him 3rd place among the non-Division I finishers. Teammates Aaron Thomas (Seminole, FL) and Trey McCain (Leesville, SC) were right behind Joel with times of 27:16 and 27:18 respectively. Rounding out the top five for the team were Justin Baker (Raleigh, NC) and Tom Carpenter (Medina, OH). Two other Mars Hill men had stout performances. Josh Corbin (Franklin, NC) ran a personal best time of 28:17 and Josh Oxendine (Rutherfordton, NC) also ran a personal best time of 28:27 which was 1:46 improvement over his previous fastest time.
Next up for the teams is the NCAA Division II Southeast Pre-Region meet on Saturday, September 13. The course is located on the campus of Wingate University. The women will be racing at the 6K distance and the men will race a 10K.
