MARS HILL, N.C. - The No. 7 Lions' lacrosse team defeated the visiting Falcons of Pfeiffer University, 12-5, Wednesday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC improved to 10-2 while Pfeiffer fell to 7-3 on the season.
David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) led the Lions scoring five goals and recording four assists. He also tallied five ground balls. Eric Benesch (Bloomingdale, Ontario, Canada) followed with a pair of goals and the same number of assists. Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) scored three times and provided his teammates with a couple of assists. Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) played 55:53 in goal and made 12 saves allowing just four goals.
Chad Olsen and Jameson Schultz led the Falcons scoring two goals apiece. Jimmy Dyches played all 60 minutes in goal for Pfeiffer and made 12 saves.
Hodgins found Benesch for the contest's first score 1:44 into the game and the Lions never looked back. MHC led 3-0 after the first quarter and led 4-0 before the Falcons got on the board with 9:58 left in the second frame. MHC took a 7-1 advantage into the locker room at the intermission. The teams traded single goals in the third stanza before the Lions won the last quarter, 4-3, to make the final score 12-5, in favor of the home team.
MHC out shot Pfeiffer, 43-26. The Lions won the ground ball battle, 33-27 and won 17-21 face-offs.
Mars Hill will host Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday in the Lions' annual senior day. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
