WINGATE, N.C. - Mars Hill junior attack Danny Farmer has been named the 2009 Deep South Conference Player of the Year, league officials announced Tuesday. The MHC Lions, who went undefeated in conference play, led the way with six all-conference selections. In addition, Mars Hill’s Chris Cudmore has been named the DSC Freshman of the Year while Sean Woods is the Coach of the Year.
Farmer, who leads the league with 48 goals and 63 points, is the top vote-getter among attackers. Teammate David Hodgins joins Farmer. Hodgins is second in the league in goals per game, assists per game and points per game. Catawba sophomore Marty Tuohy rounds out the attack position. Tuohy ranks third in the league with 3.70 points per game, fifth with 2.40 goals per game and sixth with 1.30 assists per game and.
Saint Leo University, who finished 4-1 in conference play, had four players named to the all-conference team. Wingate University had two selections while Catawba College had one.
The midfield is led by Wingate senior Mark Hodsdon, who ranks third in the league in assists per game and sixth in points. Saint Leo junior Kyle Marceau and Mars Hill senior Brent Hann join Hodsdon. Marceau ranks fourth in the league with 1.50 assists per game and seventh with 3.42 points per game. Hann finished the regular season with 13 goals and 13 assists for the Lions.
Saint Leo sophomore Mike Del Buono and Mars Hill senior Kris Frier earn all-conference selections in the specialist category. Del Buono went 109-65 in face-offs on the year while also racking up 42 ground balls for Saint Leo. Frier had two goals and an assist on the year while collecting 37 ground balls.
The defense on the all-conference team is led by Wingate senior Evan Schaller. He is joined by Saint Leo senior Alec Rahe and Mars Hill’s Cudmore. Schaller anchored the Wingate defense while leading the team with 58 ground balls and collecting a goal and an assist on the year. Rahe helped lead a Saint Leo defense that allowed a conference-low 7.39 goals per game, while collecting 32 ground balls on the year. Cudmore, a four-time Freshman of the Week recipient, racked up 50 ground balls on the year while leading a Mars Hill defense that allowed only 8.95 goals per game, ranking second in the DSC.
Saint Leo sophomore David Erdman and Mars Hill senior Nick Sigona are the all-conference goalies. Erdman has a .579 save percentage while averaging 10.64 saves per game and a league-best 7.76 goals against per game. Sigona has a .581 save percentage and 11.92 saves per game, while holding opponents to 8.90 goals per game.
