MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill lacrosse team is ranked ninth in the nation according to Face-Off Yearbook and has six players on the publication's preseason All-America Team. The rankings are compiled by Inside Lacrosse staff members after consulting with coaches across the spectrum of the game.
The Lions posted a record of 11-6 last season. The squad averaged 13.06 goals per game, good for fourth best in the nation.
Danny Farmer and Kris Frier were both named to the preseason All-America Second Team. The Calgary, Alberta, native was third on the team in goals (28) and points (38). Frier, who hails from Tully, N.Y., accounted for a team-high 51 caused turnovers.
Four Mars Hill players made the Honorable Mention All-America Team. Those recognized included David Hodgins (Windor, Ontario), Tyler Farmer (Calgary, Alberta), Jeff Cizdziel (Stafford, Va.) and Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.).
Last season Hodgins, an attacker, posted a team-high 22 assists and was second on the team with 29 goals and 51 points. Two of his goals were game winners.
Farmer was an offensive machine in his first season with the Lions. The midfielder scored a team-high 35 goals and registered 52 points. He was second on the team in assists with 17.
Cizdziel mustered 24 goals and 32 points from the Face-Off position in 2008. He ranked fourth on the team in each category. Cisdziel also netted one short-handed goal.
A solid goalie, Sigona allowed only 10.29 goals per game while in net. The goals allowed average ranked Mars Hill nineteenth best in the nation in that statistic.
