MARS HILL, N.C. - The No. 10 Lions' lacrosse team remained undefeated in the Deep South Conference with an impressive 14-7 win over Rollins College Sunday afternoon in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the DSC while the Tars fell to 2-6 on the season, 0-3 in the league.
David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) led MHC scoring five goals and providing the Lions' offense with three assists. His goals and total points were season highs for Hodgins. Brent Hann (Fallston, Md.), Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Eric Benesch (Bloomingdale, Ontario, Canada) each scored two goals in the win. Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y. ) played 52:56 minutes in goal for MHC and made 11 saves.
Cooper Gilman led Rollins with three goals. B.J. Neller followed with two goals and one assist. Zach Cole played all 60 minutes in goal for the Tars and made 11 saves.
Hodgins gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with 12:33 left in the first quarter and MHC never looked back. The Lions led 3-0 at the end of the first period and went ahead 4-0 before Rollins got on the board. Both teams scored three goals in the second frame to make the halftime tally, 6-3 in favor of the Lions.
MHC out scored the Tars 2-1 in the third stanza and 6-3 in the final quarter to make the final score 14-7. Shots were tied at 31-all. MHC won the ground ball battle, 40-37 and took 13-21 face-offs. MHC was 3-7 in extra man opportunities while Rollins was 2-10 in EMO.
Mars Hill will play at DSC rival Wingate University on April 4. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
