Tara WestMARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill split a doubleheader with Montreat Wednesday afternoon at Ponder Park. The Lions dropped the first game 3-2 but rallied to win the second game 3-0. Mars Hill is now 7-7. Montreat is 6-8.

In the first game, Montreat got on the board with a Kerby Barkdoll (Hendersonville, N.C.) two-run homerun off Lion pitcher Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, N.C.) in the top of the second inning. Erin Cross (Morganton, N.C.) then hit a solo homerun in the top of the third to increase the Cavaliers lead to 3-0.

Mars Hill tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning as Tara West (Urbana, Ohio) jacked a two-run bomb over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the Lions could not sustain the rally as Jenny Hoyt (Ross Hill, Kan.) popped up to end the game.

Rachel Stowe (Belmont, N.C.) picked up the first game victory for Montreat, allowing only two runs on five hits in seven innings pitched. Farthing was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in three innings pitched.

The Lions rebounded in the second game and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to notch the victory. West doubled up the middle to plate Anna James (Bellevue, Wash.) and Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, S.C.). Later in the inning, Jordan Poarch (Hickory, N.C.) singled down the left field line, scoring West.

West, now 4-4, picked up the victory in game two for Mars Hill. She pitched a complete game and gave up no runs while striking out six batters. Meredith Mitchell (Seneca, S.C.) was tagged with the loss for Montreat. She allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

The Lions will travel to North Greenville for a doubleheader on March 7. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
