DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Despite wet conditions, a large crowd turned out to watch the No. 11-ranked North Georgia softball team take a pair of games from the Mars Hill Lions in the Saints 2009 season opener. North Georgia is now 2-0. The Lions are now 2-6.
North Georgia won the first game 4-1.
Sarah Phillips (Powell, Ohio), now 1-0, picked up her first win of the season in game one, giving up only five hits and one earned run. Paige Brantley (Raleigh, N.C.) suffered the loss for the Lions, allowing four runs on eight hits.
Laura Voyles (Powder Springs, Ga.) went 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Courtney McGuire (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a two run homer and a double. Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored the Lions' lone run in the top of the fourth inning.
North Georgia pulled out the second game 5-1.
Game two saw the Saints ahead early, scoring four runs off Lions' pitcher Tara West (Urbana, Ohio) in the first inning.
Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, N.C.) doubled in the top of the third inning to right field which scored Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, N.C.), but a ground out at the next at-bat ended the Lions' threat.
Strong pitching from Trisha Snider (Highland, Md.), now 1-0, and some key defensive plays late in the game held the Lions to only one run.
McGuire and Voyles combined for a pair of hits at the plate, while freshman Pilar Harden (Watkinsville, Ga.) singled through the left side to give the Saints their final run.
Mars Hill will host Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader February 18 at Ponder Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
