MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill College men's and women's swimming teams defeated Pfeiffer University in a dual meet Friday night at Harrell Pool. Both of the Lions team improved to 2-0 on the season. The men won 147-111 while the women won by a score of 189-58.
The women were very impressive winning 12 of 15 events. Lena Palo (Lexington, S.C.) led the Lions winning four events. She won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.66), 50-yard freestyle (26.45), 100-yard freestyle (56.25) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.51). Mariya Kulakova (Asheville, N.C.) won two events in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.21) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.26). Other winners included Ashley Varga (Port Charlotte, Fla.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Rebekah Thomas (Stanley, N.C.) in the 100-yard backstroke, Ana Chocarro (Madrid, Spain) in the 200-yard butterfly and Tiffany Golding (Dobson, N.C.) in the 500-yard freestyle.
Ed Smith (Blairsville, Ga.) and Carson Fackler (Bakersfield, Ca.) led the men's squad winning two events apiece. Smith won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.77) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.28). Fackler won the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.74) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.41). P.J. Maloney (Corning, N.Y.) and Luke Hoffman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) rounded out the individual winners. Maloney was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.13) while Hoffman won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:42.07).
MHC will host King and LaGrange on December 6. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
