BOONE, N.C. – The Mars Hill men’s and women’s track teams took full advantage of perfect weather conditions by turning in five new school records and numerous personal bests at the Appalachian Invitational. Included in these performances was a NCAA Div. II National Championship qualifying mark by sophomore Frankie Waters (Brevard, N.C.) in the 110m Hurdles.
Waters broke his own school record in the prelims with a time 14.69 seconds. Waters then destroyed that time in the finals by running a blazing time of 14.56 seconds. This time gives Waters a provisional qualifying mark for the National Championships and currently ranks him fifth in the country.
Junior Richard Clarke (Lookout Mountain, Ga.) also turned in an impressive record breaking performance in the discus throw. Clarke capitalized on the calm winds and improved on his own school record with a throw of 39.07m (128’2”).
Fellow junior Ashley McCarthy (Clearwater, Fla.) also improved on her own school record in the high jump. McCarthy finished third in the competition by clearing a height of 1.60m (5’3”).
Senior Tyrea Allen (Murphy, N.C.) capped off the day by breaking school records in both the 200m and 400m dash. Allen won the 400m dash in a time of 49.92 seconds and finished second in the 200m dash in 22.41 seconds.
The track teams return to action next week at Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Lions will be competing for the South Atlantic Conference Championship at the two-day meet.
