Frankie WatersBOONE, N.C. –  Both track and field teams kicked off the Indoor Season this past weekend on the track at Appalachian State University. The meet featured stiff competition from a total of 14 teams.

The highlight of the day for Mars Hill came from Frankie Waters, currently ranked third in the nation, in the 55 meter High Hurdles. The Brevard, N.C., native finished fourth overall in the preliminaries with a time of 7.81 seconds. That mark earned Waters a spot in the finals of the meet where he finished third in a time of 7.67 seconds. Waters' time was good enough to qualify for the Division II Nationals.

Richard Clarke also had an outstanding day for the Lions. Clarke, from Lookout Mountain, Ga., picked up where he left off last season and set a new Mars Hill record in the Weight Throw. His throw of 34’ 8 ½” eclipsed the old mark by over one foot.

Both teams will next compete at the Virginia Military Institute Invitational on Saturday, February 7. The meet will take place all day in Lexington, Va.
