MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' women's soccer team defeated Erskine College, 4-0 Wednesday night at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC improved to 8-7-3 on the year while the Flying Fleet fell to 5-10 on the season.
Frankie Armstrong (Creedmoor, N.C.) scored the first goal of the match off a header from an indirect kick from Brittany Downs (Orlando, Fla.) at the 29:16 mark. Five minutes later (35:00) Alicia Blaha (Rapid City, S.D.) scored off a rebound that was sent in by Jamila Walker (Somerset, N.J.). The teams would carry that score into the locker room at the intermission.
Abbie Hoard (Kalamazoo, Mich.) crossed the ball to Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) who put a header past Erskine's keeper at the 48:48 mark. Martin then scored her second goal of the contest on a breakaway in the 56th minute on a pass from Downs. That was her second assist of the match. Salem Woody (Apex, N.C.) ended the scoring at the 79:16 mark from 40 yards out. Alex Turner (Knoxville, Tenn.) assisted the final goal.
MHC out shot Erskine, 27-2 and edged the Flying Fleet in corner kicks, 6-1. Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio) played the entire match in the net for the Lions. Jordan Lawson also played 90 minutes in goal for EC and made seven saves. The five goals scored by MHC was a season high for the Lions.
MHC will play at SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne College on October 25. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
