HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (11-5-2, 3-3-1) defeated Mars Hill (8-8-3, 1-6) 2-0 Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference match at Bears Field at the Moretz Sports Athletic Complex.
L-R freshman midfielder Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) opened the scoring with her team-leading 14th goal of the season just 8:01 into the match when took a cross from junior forward Lauren Rosch (Knoxville, Tenn.) and placed the ball into the back of the net from the left side.
The contest remained 1-0 until the 89th minute of the contest when Bear freshman forward Nicole Phegley (Flemington, N.J.) scored right in front of the net off a deflection. L-R junior midfielder Audrey Moore (Bath, England) was credited with the assist.
Lenoir-Rhyne held an 18-8 advantage in shots while goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, N.C.) picked up the shutout. Burwell stopped four shots while Mars Hill's Becca Sellers (Loveland, Ohio) suffered the loss in goal despite making eight saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne visits Greeneville, Tenn., to play Tusculum next Saturday beginning at 2 p.m., in its regular season finale while Mars Hill returns home to face Lincoln Memorial Wednesday at 7 p.m., in its last match of the regular season before the league tournament.
