 MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' women's soccer team lost their final home match to Lincoln Memorial University, 3-1 at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 8-9-3 overall and 1-7 in the SAC. LMU improved to 11-4-1 on the season and 4-3 in the league.
Leanne Reid (Aberdeen, Scotland) scored the first goal of the match at the 23:12 mark scoring from 10 yards out off a pass from Hanna-Mari Toivonen (Tampere, Finland). Seven minutes later Jamila Walker (Somerset, N.J.) knocked a header past LMU keeper Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, Fla.). The goal was assisted by Garrett Patton (Woodruff, S.C.). The teams carried the 1-1 tie into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the second frame Becky Thompson (Frederick, Md.) scored a pair of goals within three minutes of each other to seal the win for the Railsplitters. Thompson hit a shot from 20 yards out at the 52:01 mark and then put a shot past MHC keeper Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio) in the 55th minute (54:32).
LMU out shot the Lions, 19-16 and edged MHC in corner kicks, 9-6. Sellars played the entire match in goal for MHC and made eight saves. Hollis also played 90 minutes in the net for LMU and made six stops.
Tonight's match was the last regular season match for the Lions. MHC will await the pairings of the 2008 Food Lion SAC Tournament. The first round will be played on November 5 at the higher seed. LMU will end their regular season hosting Wingate University on November 1. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
