DUE WEST, S.C. - Both the Mars Hill men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2009 campaign in true European cross county style. The two kilometer course featured multiple barriers to hurdle as well as a large ditch. Overall the teams fared well on a very hot day.
The Mars Hill men turned in a strong team effort and brought home the overall title. Finishing third overall in his first race for Mars Hill was Justin Gragg (Lenoir, N.C.). He was followed closely by Kit Powell (Antigo, Wis.) and Trey McCain (Leesville, S.C.). The second wave of Mars Hill men included Eric Blackburn (State Road, N.C.), Ryan Levander (Bismark, N.D.) and Josh Corbin (Franklin, N.C.).
Leading the way for the women's team during the four kilometer race were junior Hannah Moore (Franklin, N.C.) and Rachael Rogers (Clayton, Ga.), who ran in her first college race. Also running unattached for the ladies were Cassie Adamson (Commerce Township, Mich.), who finished second overall in the race with a time of 16:25, and Heidi Hooker (Lawsonville, N.C.).
Mars Hill’s next meet is the Eye Open held on the campus of the Roger Milikan Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The first race will begin at 8:00 a.m.
