Giovanni MalnattiMARS HILL, N.C. - Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) scored on a unassisted breakaway with less than seven minutes left in regulation to lift Carson-Newman over Mars Hill in both teams South Atlantic Conference opener in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions fell to 1-4-1 on the year while the Eagles improved to 2-1-1 on the season.

Everardo Flores (Silver Spring, Md.) scored the first goal of the match to put the Eagles up 1-0 at the 21:20 mark off a deflection. Daniel Tackling (Norwich, Conn.) recorded the assist on the goal. The teams took that score into the locker room at halftime.

Giovanni Malnati (Guayaquil, Ecuador) tied the match in the 61st minute on a cross from Friddy Hoegner (Cologne, Germany). MHC could not muster another score in the final minutes of play.

C-N out shot the Lions 18-14 and edged MHC in corner kicks 9-5. Each team was called offsides once. Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.) played the entire match in the net for Mars Hill and made three saves. Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) also played the entire match in the net for the Eagles and made five saves.

Mars Hill will host USC Aiken on Saturday. Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start.
