HICKORY, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team tied Lenoir-Rhyne 1-1 Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports Athletic Complex. The Lions hold a 4-6-3 overall record and are 2-2-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears are now 6-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the league.
Brendan Howard (Tampa, Fla.) got Lenoir-Rhyne on the board in the first 24 seconds of the game with a breakaway goal down the right sideline. He blasted the ball from 10 yards out past Alex Huckabee (Kernersville, N.C.) to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Mars Hill tied the game in the 58th minute. Danny O'Neill (Glasgow, Scotland) crossed a pass into the box to Friddy Hoegener (Cologne, Germany) who beat Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, Mexico) from eight yards out.
Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation but were unable to capitalize. In the 69th minute, Huckabee made a diving save on a shot by Daniel Jones (Wrexham, Wales). In the 77th minute, Rury Caulfield (Glasgow, Scotland) was denied by Banuelos, and the game went into the first overtime.
In the 92nd minute, Howard was stonewalled by Huckabee. Simon Marriott (Glasgow, Scotland) and Gary Bajkowsky (Dunedin, Fla.) each had shots in the period but missed to the left.
In the second overtime, a shot by Caulfield hit the crossbar and barely missed being the game winner.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot Mars Hill 26-17. Huckabee made nine saves for the Lions. Banuelos recorded seven saves for the Bears.
Mars Hill will travel to King on Saturday. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
