BRISTOL, Tenn. – King College snapped a three-game losing streak in a 71-66 victory over Mars Hill College in King’s home opener Saturday.
Raby, a senior guard from Farragut, Tenn., used a career-high 29 points which gives her 1,003 over her four years in a King uniform.
The win improved King’s record to 3-4 on the season and avenged a 73-54 defeat at Mars Hill on Nov. 24. The Lady Tornado also went to 4-1 in home openers over the last five seasons.
Ashley Deans (Greeneville, Tenn.) added 21 points and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds for the winning squad.
The teams battled early until King built a five-point lead, 14-9, after Derika Mooney (Athens, Tenn.) knocked down her only three points of the game with 14:29 to go in the half. Mooney went on to distribute a season-high seven assists.
The lead went on up to seven, but a Mars Hill 9-2 spurt tied the contest. The squads traded baskets once again and Raby sent King into the locker room up 34-32 thanks to her 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Mars Hill cut the margin down to three with 4:07 left, but King rallied to pull away for the win.
The Lions went to 2-4 on the season and were led by Taylor Deal’s (Catawba, N.C.) 22 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) also poured in 20 points.
Mars Hill grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and 36 in the game. The Lions were able to score 13 second-chance points in the game. King was able to collect 35 rebounds.
King shot 53.2 percent (25-for-47) from the field and held Mars Hill to 30.3 percent (20-for-66). Mars Hill owned the advantage at the free-throw line going 20-for-28. King was 15-for-26 at the line. Both teams had six 3-pointers.
The Lady Tornado was able to dish out a season-high 18 assists.
Mars Hill will host Lander on Tuesday. Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 6 p.m.
