GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team fell in overtime 102-92 to Tusculum on Wednesday in Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers improve to 11-7 overall and 4-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lions drop to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the league.
Tusculum opened the game on a 21-9 spurt before Mars Hill closed the gap. The Lions took their first lead of the game 24-23 off a three by Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) at the 5:50 mark.
Young hit another three 1:21 before the half to give Mars Hill a 35-31 halftime lead. Taylor Deal (Catawba, N.C.) had 15 points in the first period. Jasmine Gunn (Nashville, Tenn.) scored 13 points in the first half.
The Lions took a six-point advantage, 37-31, 30 seconds into the second half off a jumper by Margaret Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.) before Tusculum tied the game at 41 off a layup by Staci Hicks (Loveland, Ohio) with 16:26 left in regulation.
Mars Hill's largest lead in the second half was off a jumper by Harvey with seven minutes remaining to make the score 68-61.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Gunn made a layup to give the Pioneers a 79-77 lead. Young hit a layup with six seconds left to push the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Tusculum asserted itself and never trailed. The Pioneers held an 11-point advantage, 99-88, at one point off two made free throws by Gunn.
Gunn finished with 27 points and 10 assists. Catherine Hintz (Hastings, Minn.) had 24 points and 13 rebounds. Hicks scored 15 points and 14 rebounds. Jasmine Parker (Rex, Ga.) and Kendal Baxter (Sevierville, Tenn.) scored 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Young poured in 27 points. Deal had 23 points and nine rebounds. Harvey recorded 21 points. Krystal Moore (Summerfield, N.C.) had 11 points.
Mars Hill will travel to Brevard on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
