BREVARD, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team tied Brevard 1-1 on Friday. The Lions are now 2-12-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Tornados are now 6-9-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the league.
Allie Hovis (Charlotte, N.C.) gave Brevard a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Bailey Varley (Concord, N.C.) crossed a pass through two defenders to Hovis who beat Chelsea Parker (Richmond, Va.) for her seventh goal of the season.
Abby Martin answered for the Lions in the 65th minute. From 25 yards out, the Greer, S.C., native struck the ball over the head of Sydney Douglas (Houston, Texas) for her team-high fifth goal of the season to tie the game.
The game went into overtime where both teams had numerous chances to win. In the second overtime, Varley put the ball in the net but was called for offside. Martin had two shots on goal that were saved. Varley took a corner pass and put a shot on goal from eight yards out but was stonewalled by Parker.
"I'm happy I was able to assist in the team's tie for today's match," said Martin. "I hope this game propels us in a positive direction for the rest of the season and into the conference tournament."
Mars Hill will host Anderson University on Tuesday in the "Kick for Cancer" game. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
