MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' women's soccer team lost to SAC rival Catawba College Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium, 3-1. MHC fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the league while Catawba improved to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC.
Brittany Downs (Orlando, Fla.) scored the first goal in the match to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage at the 35:08 mark off a corner kick from Abbie Hoard ( Kalamazoo, Mich.). Alyssa Refundle (Mooresville, N.C.) tied the contest at 1-all in the 42nd minute from 30 yards out. The teams carried that score into the locker room at halftime.
The second frame belonged to the Catawba Indians. Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario, Canada) notched the match winner at the 52:40 mark from 25 yards away and then Kristen Girardi (Asheville, N.C.) added an insurance goal in the 59th minute. Girardi's goal was assisted by Maria Borland (Hagerstown, Md.)
Catawba out shot MHC 22-10 and edged the Lions in corner kicks, 3-2. Chelsea Parker (Richmond, Va.) played all 90 minutes in goal for MHC and made seven saves. Lindsay Webster ( Hopkinton, Mass.) played the entire contest in the net for Catawba and made six stops.
Mars Hill will host Carson-Newman College on Saturday night, October 3. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
