BRISTOL, Tenn. - A second half comeback by the Mars Hill women's soccer team was thwarted in the final three minutes as the Lions lost to King College Wednesday night at Parks Field by a score of 3-2. Mars Hill fell to 0-6 on the season. The Tornados improved to 4-1 on the year.
King controlled much of the first half and kept the ball on the Mars Hill side of the field. The Tornados struck first 9:37 into the game when Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) put the ball past Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio) from 15 yards out.
King grabbed a two goal lead at the 31:53 mark. Maggie Lynskey (Chattanooga Tenn.) took an Emma Wells' (Boone, N.C.) corner kick and headed the ball into the back of the net.
The Tornados took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Mars Hill's offensive came alive as they mounted a comeback halfway into the second half. An Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) shot hit off the crossbar, but Patrice Superville (Chaguanas, Trinidad) was in the right place for the Lions and headed the ball into the net past Lauren Fritts (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Lions struck again approximately four minutes later. Shelby Wilson (Arlington, Vt.) drilled a shot from 25 yards out to tie the game.
The remainder of the game went back and forth, but King scored the decisive goal at the 87:20 mark. Shelton scored her second goal of the game, past a diving Sellars, off a Wells' corner kick.
Sellars made eight saves for Mars Hill. Fritts recorded five saves for the Tornados.
Mars Hill will host Newberry on September 16 at Meares Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
