Brittany DownsMARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions women's soccer team lost their home opener Friday night to Pfeiffer University in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium, 3-1. MHC fell to 0-4 on the season while the Falcons improved to 1-0-1.

Kirsten Bartsch got the Falcons on the board first at the 19:17 mark when she hit a shot off the wing from 10 yards out. The goal was unassisted.

Sam Brown put Pfeiffer up 2-0 with under two minutes left in the first frame (43:05) when she scored off a corner kick sent in by Kaylie Lawing. The Lions went into the locker room at halftime trailing, 2-0.

Brittany Downs (Orlando, Fla.) brought the Lions within one goal of Pfeiffer in the 69th minute when she scored off an indirect kick from about 35 yards out. The ball was passed by Caity Murnahan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Alyssa Wombwell added and insurance goal at the 78:09 mark when she scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out. The Falcons left MHC with a 3-1 victory.

Pfeiffer out shot MHC 11-2 and edged the Lions, 2-0 in corner kicks. Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio) played the entire match in goal for MHC and made two saves. Suzie Hinman also played the entire 90 minutes in the net for Pfeiffer and made one stop.

MHC will host Queens University of Charlotte on September 6. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
